The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified a number of "Neglected Infections of Poverty". These are infections that have received little surveillance or prevention and primarily affects impoverished people in the United States (CDC, 2012). One of the major infections targeted for further action is the parasite Taenia solium (pork tapeworm) and its' larvae (cysticerci) which is the agent that causes cysticercosis and neurocysticercosis in humans.

This site was created and presented by Susan Bucher, RN

This site and information is the compilation of my service learning project (SLP) for
the University of Southern Indiana, Nursing 455: Community Health Nursing, Spring 2012.

My original intent was to do an in person presentation at my clinical site for the health workers there. I am available to give an in person presentation at anytime upon request. As this class is a distance education class, and people who might want to see this presentation at my clinical site or elsewhere may not be available at the time(s) I present it, I decided to make an online presentation. This way anyone who wants to see the presentation can do so at anytime, and I can reach a much broader audience giving this topic more public outreach than I could do so if I only gave in person presentations.

A special thanks to my instructor Julie St Clair at the University of Southern Indiana and to Sherry Gramse of the Will Grundy Medical Clinic.
